Dental implants

Dental implants are the only replacement for your natural tooth which can be separate from  any other teeth. They are fixed solidly in place leaving the adjacent teeth unharmed.

A dental implant is generally a small screw made from titanium. If you lose one tooth, we can place the implant fixture in the area where the root of the old tooth was. A crown is then placed on the top of the fixture to match your existing teeth. This looks and feels like a natural tooth.

Implants can be used in many other ways, for example if you struggle with dentures, a number of implants can be linked together with each other to support your dentures, or even give you a fixed full set of teeth back.

Most people are suitable candidates for implants but because every patient is different, implant treatment methods vary depending on the nature of the problem.

Stages

Generally, treatment is carried out in two stages over a three-to-six-month period and requires between five and seven visits.

STAGE ONE

The first stage is to place the implant fixture into the jawbone.

STAGE TWO

The second stage is to expose the implant through the gum. Impressions are then taken for the final implant crown, bridge or denture, with the final fitting usually taking place two to three weeks later.

However…

In many cases now we can place implants on the day the tooth is taken out. If appropriate we can place a temporary tooth which looks like your old tooth on the same day. We have special site-specific implants and procedures for this procedure.

We have one of the only special plasma treatment machines in the country to treat the surface  of the implant just before we put it in. This treatment ensures the implant is as perfect as possible before it goes in and makes the connection with your body stronger as a result.

We use the best CT scanning for 3D X-ray pictures and digital impressions with digital software  to plan your cases. 

Dr Ainsworth has a special interest in difficult bone regeneration situations, and failing implant work, and regularly receives referral cases from other implant colleagues. He lectures internationally on the subject of synthetic bone regeneration.
